Detailed Itinerary
Day 1

Your journey begins when you arrive at Kigali International Airport. A knowledgeable safari guide will meet you and take you on a brief city tour, including visits to genocide memorials. Afterward, you’ll drive to Uganda through the Cyanika Border. If you cross via Katuna Border, the trip may take longer. Arrive in Kisoro by evening and check into your lodge, such as Kisoro Travelers or Gahinga Lodge. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay. The drive from Kigali to Kisoro usually takes around 3 hours via Cyanika Border, or 6 hours via Katuna Border.
Day 2
Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga National Park
After an early breakfast, head to Mgahinga National Park’s headquarters for a briefing on gorilla trekking rules. Remember to pack essentials like water, a jacket, a camera, a packed lunch, and hiking boots. The trek can last 4 to 6 hours. Once you find the silverback gorilla and its family, you’ll spend an hour observing them. Return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay. Meals are provided on a full-board basis.
Day 3
Hiking in Mgahinga National Park
Enjoy breakfast early in the morning before heading back to Mgahinga National Park for a hike. The park is known for its piles of rocks, which locals have used for centuries. The hike lasts about 6 to 7 hours and offers stunning views, including bamboo forests and different vegetation zones. Mount Gahinga’s old crater lake has turned into a scenic swamp. Bring at least two liters of water, packed lunch, and snacks. You can rent a walking stick at the start of the trek and hire a porter to help with your gear. Return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 4
Batwa Trail Experience
On this day, explore the Batwa Trail, which offers a unique cultural experience. The Batwa people once lived in the dense forests at the base of the Virunga Volcanoes, depending on the forest for food and shelter. When Mgahinga Gorilla National Park was established, the Batwa were displaced. Now, they lead visitors on the Batwa Trail, sharing their traditional knowledge and history. The tour includes demonstrations of hunting techniques, honey gathering, medicinal plant uses, and the creation of bamboo cups. The highlight is a visit to the sacred Ngarama Cave, where Batwa women perform a moving song. Return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 5
Golden Monkey Tracking & Transfer to Kigali
Start your day with breakfast before heading out for golden monkey tracking in Mgahinga National Park. After a briefing, the search for these playful monkeys may take 4 to 5 hours. Following the tracking, begin your drive back to Kigali, with lunch on the way. If time permits, you can visit additional genocide memorials along the Kigali-Musanze road. Arrive in Kigali by the evening for your flight home.
